Practice questions

Coastal Skipper practice questions with explanations

Use active recall to check whether you can apply the syllabus rather than just recognise it. The sample questions cover the kind of advanced knowledge areas Coastal Skipper candidates need to be fluent with.

Tides

1. A secondary port has a quoted HW time difference from the standard port. What is the first check before applying it?

Secondary port differences can vary between springs and neaps. Check which column or interpolation is needed before using the correction.

Course to steer

2. In a tidal course-to-steer problem, why is the tidal stream vector normally drawn first from the start position?

The tide moves the yacht over the ground while the boat makes progress through the water. The water-track vector then closes the triangle to the destination.

Restricted visibility

3. A sailing yacht under power enters thick fog near a traffic route. Which action best matches the COLREGs approach?

Restricted visibility demands safe speed, lookout by all available means, lights, sound signals, and early risk assessment. Power or sail status does not create a shortcut.

Meteorology

4. A barometer falls steadily by 6 hPa over three hours while the wind backs and cloud thickens. What should the skipper assume?

A steady pressure fall, backing wind, and thickening cloud are warning signs. Treat the forecast as changing and review the passage plan.

Electronic navigation

5. A chart plotter position looks plausible but differs from a transit and depth contour. What is the best next step?

Coastal navigation uses electronic aids as evidence, not proof. Cross-check with visual bearings, transits, depths, radar, AIS, and the log.

Passage planning

6. Why might a Coastal passage plan include a tidal gate at a headland or race?

Tidal gates protect the plan from strong adverse streams, races, overfalls, or unsafe entry windows. They are decision points, not decoration.

Visual aids

7. A charted light characteristic reads Fl(3) 10s. What should you expect to see?

Fl(3) 10s means a group of three flashes repeats every 10 seconds. Range is shown separately on the chart.

Position fixing

8. What is the key extra step in a running fix compared with a two-bearing fix taken at the same time?

A running fix uses observations at different times, so the earlier position line must be advanced for the run made before it is crossed with the later line.

Passage planning

9. Which item belongs in a Coastal passage plan but is often missed in a simple route sketch?

At Coastal level the plan should include decision points, alternatives, tidal constraints, pilotage, weather, hazards, crew roles, and contingencies.

Leeway

10. A yacht is making leeway to starboard. When shaping a course through the water, what must be allowed for?

Leeway pushes the vessel sideways through the water. A course-to-steer calculation must allow for it before converting to magnetic or compass course.

Practise application, not recognition

Coastal questions often hinge on method: which correction comes first, when to cross-check an electronic fix, how to time a tidal gate, or how a forecast changes the plan.

Use weak areas to choose the next module

If a question exposes a weak area, go straight to that module. Chartwork, tides, weather, and COLREGs reward repeated passes.

Keep official assessment boundaries clear

These are independent revision questions, not official RYA exam questions, leaked papers, or answer keys.

Common questions

Are these official RYA exam questions?

No. They are independent revision questions written to help you practise the Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory knowledge areas.

Can I practise one topic at a time?

Yes. Open any module and use its quiz before switching to mixed practice or the mock exam.

Do the questions include explanations?

Yes. Feedback explains the reasoning so each question becomes a revision step rather than just a score.
