Mock exam practice

Coastal Skipper theory mini mock

Mock practice is most useful once you have revised the main modules. It forces you to switch between chartwork, tides, COLREGs, weather, pilotage, and passage planning without being told which topic is coming next.

The full timed mock is included with all modules, tools, flashcards, and review features.

Course to steer

1. A 2-hour leg has different tidal streams in each hour. What is the sound method?

For a multi-hour CTS, build the total tidal set from each hour's stream, then draw the water-track vector needed to reach the destination.

COLREGs

2. A sailing vessel is overtaking a power-driven vessel. Which vessel must keep clear?

Rule 13 makes the overtaking vessel keep clear, regardless of whether she is sailing or power-driven.

Meteorology

3. What is the practical significance of a rapidly falling barometer before a coastal passage?

A rapid fall in pressure is a warning sign. Combine it with forecasts, clouds, wind shifts, sea state, and local effects before committing.

Tides

4. When planning depth at a secondary port, what must be combined with charted depth?

Available depth is charted depth plus the corrected height of tide. Compare it with draft and a safety margin.

Pilotage

5. Which pilotage technique helps confirm that you stay clear of an unseen hazard?

A clearing bearing is a pre-planned bearing limit. Staying on the safe side of it helps confirm you are clear of the danger.

Use mock exams late

Do targeted module practice first. Use the mock when you need pacing, topic switching, and a realistic readiness check.

Read the breakdown, not just the score

If the result is weak in chartwork, tides, or weather, revise that module and retest. The aim is reliable method, not lucky guesses.

Know the real assessment shape

Some providers describe three assessment papers: IRPCS/COLREGs, chartwork, and passage making. This app uses independent practice to help you prepare for those knowledge areas.

Common questions

Does the mock exam replace the RYA assessment?

No. It is independent revision practice and does not award an RYA certificate.

Should I aim for a pass boundary?

Use a comfortable margin. Advanced theory can punish small method errors, especially in tides, CTS, and passage-making questions.

Are these RYA exam answers?

No. The mock uses independent revision questions and explanations, not official answers or leaked papers.
