Module 1 - Nautical Terms
Worked scenario prompt
Scenario: you are planning a longer coastal passage with tidal gates, night or reduced-visibility risk, and fewer easy bolt-holes and Parts of a Boat — Fore and Aft becomes the deciding topic. Conditions are workable but not perfect: the crew is mixed in experience, the tide or weather may change the margin, and another vessel or local constraint may affect your options.
A strong answer should not jump straight to a final word. State what you know, what you do not know yet, and what extra check would make the decision safe enough for Coastal Skipper-level passage judgement.
Key points
- Say the hazard or decision in one sentence.
- Identify the missing information before choosing the action.
- Choose the simple conservative option when the margin is unclear.
- Brief the crew in practical language, not exam shorthand.
