Module 13 - Meteorology
Weather and the Sailor
Weather is one of the most critical factors in safe seamanship. Wind strength and direction determine sailing conditions, sea state affects comfort and safety, and visibility impacts navigation. At Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore level you must obtain, interpret, and act on forecasts — and relate them to barometer trends and developing synoptic patterns for longer or more exposed passages.
You should be able to sketch a simple synoptic chart from a shipping forecast, track fronts across the British Isles, predict short-range weather changes from barometer trends, and understand local effects such as sea breezes and katabatic winds.
- Check the weather forecast BEFORE every passage
- Monitor conditions and forecasts throughout the passage
- Be prepared to change plans if weather deteriorates
- At CS/YM level: interpret synoptic charts and barometer trends
