Module 5 - COLREGs
Navigation Lights
Power-driven vessels display: masthead light(s) (white, 225°), sidelights (red port, green starboard, each 112.5°), and a stern light (white, 135°). Vessels 50m or more show two masthead lights (the forward one lower).
A sailing vessel under sail displays sidelights and a stern light. If less than 20m, it may instead combine those sectors in one lantern at or near the masthead. Rule 25 also permits two all-round lights, red over green, at or near the masthead, but not together with the combined lantern. At anchor, vessels less than 50m may show one all-round white light; vessels 50m or more show two.
Special lights include: NUC (two all-round red), RAM (red-white-red all-round), fishing other than trawling (red over white), trawling (green over white), and a vessel aground (two all-round red plus anchor lights). Fishing vessels making way also show sidelights and a sternlight.
- Power-driven: masthead (white 225°) + sidelights + stern
- Sailing: sidelights + stern; Rule 25 permits specified combined or red-over-green alternatives
- Anchor: all-round white light
- NUC: two all-round red (vertical)
- RAM: red-white-red (vertical)
- Fishing: red over white; trawling: green over white
