Advanced Anchoring Decisions

Start by naming the problem: insufficient shelter, poor or uncertain set, limited swing, a reversing stream, grounding, a fouled anchor or an equipment limit. More cable or another anchor does not repair a weak bottom, an exposed lee shore, inadequate depth, unsafe traffic conflict or an overloaded windlass. Moving before conditions worsen is often the stronger control.

A second anchor changes the whole system. Two separated anchors may be arranged to address different load directions or restrict swing, while an opposing-anchor arrangement is sometimes called a Bahamian moor. The rodes can load unequally, cross or foul as the yacht turns; neighbouring craft may swing differently; one anchor may not reset; and recovery becomes more complex. Angle, cable and sequence must be chosen for the actual vessel, bottom and forces, not copied from a fixed diagram.

Kedging or warping uses a separately deployed anchor and rode to move or reposition a yacht. It needs surveyed depth, a suitable anchor and load path, competent crew, controlled deployment, clear communications and a plan for grounding damage, tide and recovery. Do not throw an anchor, carry an unsuitable heavy anchor in an overloaded tender or place people in a loaded bight. A named technique does not make an improvised operation safe.

A tandem arrangement places two compatible anchors in one load direction, but its set-up, spacing, connection, bottom response and recovery are model-specific. Do not assume it doubles holding or substitutes for a better anchorage. If gear is fouled or conditions are escalating, stop forcing the windlass, control the yacht and choose among a planned change of pull, waiting for tide, competent assistance, or a controlled buoy-and-abandon procedure. The bitter end and release plan must be understood before the emergency.

Common questions

Does more scope always solve poor holding?

No. More scope may improve rode geometry, but it cannot make an unsuitable bottom, exposed anchorage, inadequate depth, unsafe traffic conflict or damaged system acceptable. It also increases swing.

Does tandem anchoring double holding power?

Do not use a universal multiplier. Performance depends on both exact anchors, connections, spacing, load, bottom and whether each anchor sets and remains aligned; recovery also becomes harder.

When is a Bahamian moor appropriate?

Opposing anchors may limit swing in some reversing-stream situations, but the arrangement is vessel- and site-specific. It can twist or foul rodes, conflict with traffic and neighbours, load anchors unevenly and complicate recovery.
