Module 17 - Marine Environment
Your Responsibility
MARPOL is the international framework for preventing pollution from ships. Its annexes address oil, sewage, garbage and harmful anti-fouling systems, and relevant requirements are implemented in UK law. MCA guidance says pollution-prevention legislation generally applies to pleasure vessels, while particular equipment, certification and discharge provisions can depend on the vessel's tonnage, voyage and certified carrying capacity.
A Coastal Skipper should turn that framework into a simple passage routine. Identify what can escape from the yacht, prevent it entering the bilge or sea, retain it securely where practicable, and know which shore facility will accept it. Add environmental checks to the same plan that covers weather, tides, pilotage and contingencies.
National guidance is not a standing permission for every harbour, inland waterway, protected site or foreign coast. Check current notices, harbour directions, local signs, charts and destination guidance. Brief the crew before the first consequential action, including refuelling, using the heads, handling rubbish, approaching wildlife, anchoring or starting maintenance.
- Prevent pollution at source and retain waste for shore disposal where practicable
- Match the rule to the material, vessel, voyage and location
- Brief the crew before they use fillers, pumps, valves, bins or anchoring gear
- Recheck the plan when the destination, local notice or conditions change
| Issue | Small-yacht operating default | Verify before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Oil or fuel | Stop leaks and retain contaminated material for shore disposal | Fuel-berth controls and spill-reporting procedure |
| Sewage | Use shore facilities and the holding tank where fitted | Vessel threshold, local controls and pump-out availability |
| Garbage | Secure it and bring it ashore | MARPOL area status and any tighter local requirement |
| Wildlife or seabed | Give space and avoid sensitive habitat | Site-specific speed, access, mooring and anchoring measures |
| Maintenance | Protect the area, collect residues and dispose ashore | Product instructions and the yard's waste route |
